The Time In Between: A Novel

Review

"A wonderful novel, in the good old tradition, with intrigue, love, mystery and tender, audacious and well-drawn characters." (Mario Vargas Llosa, recipient of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature)“It's exciting to find a deftly paced first novel with an engaging heroine, satisfying historical detail, and emotional balance. Love it!” (Esmeralda Santiago, New York Times bestselling author of Conquistadora)"The Time in Between is an epic novel with an unlikely Spanish heroine, Sira Quiroga, that takes us through one of the most turbulent times in Europe: the onset of World War II. Sira travels on a journey through romance, love, loss, and intrigue, all while discovering traits that she never dreamed she had. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough, and once I reached the end, I couldn't wait to start it all over again!" (Daisy Martinez, author of Daisy: Morning, Noon and Night and Daisy's Holiday Cooking)“Maria Dueñas is a true storyteller. She weaves a spell, conjuring the heat and the glamour, the hardship and the thrill of Morocco and Spain in the late 1930s. The world of Casablanca comes to life as war breaks and Sira Quiroga, a beautiful and betrayed seamstress, is forced to discover her own strength. At a time when everyone must do what they can to survive, some will go beyond. Resistance will be formed and history will be written. Read this book and prepare to be transported.” (Kate Morton, New York Times bestselling author of The Distant Hours)"Engaging, romantic, vivid and captivating. Who knew a story about a seamstress in Spain could be so intriguing and captivating? If you love thick, juicy female-led novels that sweep you away from all sense of time and responsibility, you need to read The Time In Between by María Dueñas." (Kathy Cano-Murillo, author of Waking Up in the Land of Glitter and Miss Scarlet's School of Patternless Sewing)"Evocative, tender and lush; a wonderful experience of times and lives in turmoil." (Diana Gabaldon, author of the New York Times bestselling Outlander novels)“This thrilling debut is marked by immaculate prose and a driving narrative, establishing Dueñas as a writer to watch.” (Publishers Weekly (starred review))"Packed with engaging characters, flawlessly researched, and breathlessly paced." (Booklist (starred review))"It is no surprise this debut novel was a runaway success in Europe. American fans of historical fiction looking for a dramatic, uncomplicated escape will be similarly entranced." (Library Journal)"From a terrific opening line to the final page, chapters zip by at a pulsing pace." (USA TODAY)

I loved this book and it has become one of my favorites! I have recommended it to my friends who heartily agree with me. Duenas uses rich language and descriptions as she writes about Sira, a young seamstress in Madrid, who makes some wrong choices and must make some hard decisions. Sira leaves Madrid with her lover and goes to exotic Morocco, where after a period of high living, her lover abandons her and leaves her penniless and with debts after spending all of her new inheritance. With the help of some new found friends she builds a wonderful life in Morocco as a designer and seamstress for the rich and famous. Duenas' language is so rich that you can smell the spices and flowers, enjoy the market place with their foods, fabrics and wares, and see the beautiful haute couture clothes that Sira designs. While Sira is in Morocco, Madrid becomes embroiled in the Spanish Civil War of the late 1930s, which is followed by WWII. Sira is asked by one of her clients, and also a good friend, to help her during the war as a spy. Sira agrees and moves back to Spain and opens a new dress shop. Many of her clients are the wealthy wives of the Nazi officers living in Madrid at this time. Her job is to listen to their conversations and pass this information on in coded messages in her dress patterns. Sira has become a beautiful, intelligent, independent and clever woman who risks everything for her beloved country. This is historical fiction at its finest, especially in the way Duenas has interwoven real people from this time period with the wonderful characters. Even though the book has 608 pages it was a very fast read that I didn't want to put down.

Couldn't put down this historical novel and this is my first book written by Maria Duenas. Sia begins in her childhood learning to sew by going to work with her single mother who is a seamstress until work dries up and the Spanish Civil War is beginning in Madrid. Sira is engaged to Ignacio who wants her to train to become a government worker like himself, however, while buying her a typewriter she meets and falls in love with a smooth talking salesman. Before she leaves Madrid with her lover, she meets her father for the first time and he attempts to make up for lost time by giving her some money and jewelery. Of course, Ramiro is a con man and takes off with all of Sira's money, jewels and leaving behind a huge hotel bill. When the police inform her that she owes a huge debt to the hotel and that her step brother is suing her for theft of the family jewels, she has no choice but to go back to her roots and begin sewing again. She avoids love but there is one man that she let get away but because all the men in her life have used her, she isn't chancing a broken heart. While doing so, she meets a good friend who introduces her to the world of espionage and spies on the Germans while sewing clothing for their wives back in her home country of Madrid. Learned a great deal of history on the impact of the spanish civil war. I will try to watch the movies but it is in spanish with subtitle...not sure I can get into it.

Here's the thing. When I hear about a book that interests me, I download and read a sample. Then I read a few of the reviews and decide if I want to buy the book or not. The sample of The Time in Between intrigued me. I liked the setting and the writing style. The first review I read stated that the first 300 pages were slow and the reviewer found that he or she hated the main character. That review almost made me decide not to buy the book. Fortunately, I read a couple more reviews that were more positive and decided to go with my first instinct and buy the book. Am I glad I did? You bet.A survey of readers of fiction showed that the main thing readers want from a novel is to be informed, to learn something. In this regard, Duenas does an admirable job of recreating the life and times in what is now Morocco and Spain of WWII. She brings the characters to life and the fictional ones are as important and well fleshed out as the historical. Is this book perfect? No. I think that it could have been tightened and some of the repetition eliminated, but in spite of that, I think it is an excellent read and well worth your time and money.

I've seen the Spanish mini series on Netflix and loved it. After watching I had to read the book. I wish i had read the book first! It was so close to the series which never happens that i already knew everything that was about to happen. But it amazed me how even the characters fit their descriptions in the book. Can't wait to read more from this author. I love historical fiction from WW2 period, but haven't read much on Spain's involvement in the war, so I definitely found that interesting. Read the book, then go watch the series on Netflix!!

Highly "readable" history of the title's topics covering the Spanish Civil War and the beginnings of WWII, with a tight focuson Morocco during those tumultuous (and generally over-looked) years & locations. The plot and most of the characters arewell drawn, gripping and "simpatico". The translation is remarkably colloquial and "easy" -- quite an accomplishment.I'm looking fprward to reading more from this appealing "new" author whose voice & subjects are so congenial.
