I love this author's books.Always well written, beautifully illustrated and sharing a great message we all can learn from. In this book, Leo the lion of Africa learns how being generous helps not only others by improves our own lives. Efrat Haddi has a way with writing children's books that makes learning fun and interesting Great job.

Efrat Haddi once again places before the public (especially aimed at children from the ages of 3 to 8) a book that simultaneously entertains and teaches. Haddi works with children in a democratic school where democracy is both a goal and a method of instruction. Her belief is that a democratic education brings democratic values such as justice, respect and trust to education, and includes self-determination within a community of equals. In this book she is joined by illustrator Abira Das once again, a sure sign that the message of the book will appeal to all children visually as well as intellectually.The setting is Africa where Leo lives with his Head Lion father Brave and enjoys life with his other lion cub friends, Rose and Crown. One day while out for play they note a turtle named Jesse who is on his back (shell) and unable to right himself. Rose and Crown want to help Jesse but Leo is hungry and would rather go home to eat than to stay and help. Rose and Crown talk to Jesse and help him get right side up, grateful to the two little lion cubs for being good friends. Rose and Crown return home, happy that they were able to help Jesse, and when they arrive home Leo mocks them and tells them they missed dinner for delaying their return home. But Brave praises Rose and Crown for being generous - helping someone without getting something in return. `Every generous act of helping others is a victory and victory makes us feel good.' Leo listens and takes it all in. The next day the trio is out for play and encounter a baby flamingo who has lost its way from its nest. They want to help, ask the turtle Jesse for advice and finally find the flamingo's mother who praises them for their generosity in finding her chick. The three lion cubs are happy and everyone wins because of being generous and unselfish.The combination of a well-written story illustrated with excellent art that entertains and teaches at the same time has become a trademark with Efrat Haddi.
