You really get your money's worth on this one. Nearly 1000 pages, and pretty much something I never knew before about The Beatles on every one. Spitz really makes you feel like you are right there, with The Beatles during the wild tours, with them in the studio, and with them for all the bickering and for the good times. I don't want to give too much away, but just to say that this is probably the best biography I ever read. Spitz really took his time in developing the characters so you felt like you knew them by the end. I would like to read more by this author, but it doesn't seem like he has written much else recently.

I can't stop thinking about this book. It is so amazing to be a Beatles fan and then read about each member's history and how hard they worked and what they went through before they actually became the Beatles as a musical success story. There are many layers of depth here and it puts the music in a different kind of perspective. It's also mind blowing to realize that everyone in the band was 30 or less when they broke up. They lived many lifetimes before it ended and went through an amazing amount of heartache, hardship and turmoil. I found this to be a page turner!

Spitz gives us a very, very, very deeply researched book that moves along at a nice clip. Needs a wee bit of editing (the Beatles fan club's trip in Hamburg, for example, is a bit much) as the author is obviously an extreme fan - as any reader of this book needs to be. Luckily for his sales there's plenty of super-fans out there, including myself.The best part of the book was revealing how much a part of the process George Martin and his team of tech heads were to making the Beatles even better. The band used the studio as an instrument, and Martin & Pals were there to show them how to do so.Not a homily to the Fab Four as people - this book shows them as they were, warts and all. You did NOT want to meet Paul or John, not the most decent of people by a long stretch.Bottom line highly recommended...for a Beatles fan who wants to know everything (and I mean everything) about the Fab Four and their music.

Quite simply a gobsmacking read. This is the quintessential yarn of the 1960s - whatever was happening, the Beatles were in the forefront, often inadvertently. I fear a little for the accuracy despite my ignorance of 1960s Britain... the few times Spitz comes near something I do know about (e.g. Australia) he comes up with some real head scratchers (thumbs up is not really an obscene gesture down here), which tends to cast doubt on most of the rest of the text. Determining the truth must have been a nearly impossible task in so many aspects. But what the hell, it is such a rattling good tale brimming with larger than life, often tragic, characters. To say the least, John Lennon does not emerge as a very honourable human being, despite his posthumous deification... in stark contrast Ringo Starr is the one leading protagonist who retained his common humanity throughout the saga. Paul McCartney is portrayed as an ambiguous figure, the most intelligent and creative Beatle but with a broad ruthless streak, it's no surprise he has thrived into his senior years to become a national treasure as untouchable as Her Majesty, his sometime muse. I docked a star because of the frenetic finish to the book, I would have liked a more detailed account of the breakup and particularly its legal and personal aftermath, but it all ended as abruptly as I Want You (She's So Heavy) with McCartney's announcement in April 1970. The Beatles saga did not end then by a long chalk, it has resonances to this day. But overall, despite his tendency to occasionally lapse into rock journalese - driving beats, searing riffs, etc. - Bob Spitz, I love you.

In journalism, there is a phrase, "dumping your notebook," which means to put in a lot of rather dull and extraneous information just because you discovered it in your reporting. I became bored with this at times for that reason. I was more interested in the music than in which house they rented where. The tone is impersonal at times. We purchased the book to get rid of cold sores. I don't know how the protocol works for genital herpes. We purchased supplements from a health food store instead of making the shakes. It cost $125, but it was worth it for the convenience. There are enough supplements for more than one round of treatment if you wanted to split the cost with someone. The treatment began in mid June, and lasted for 4 weeks. We went through the entire summer (with may very hot days) without seeing a cold sore. Maybe it worked!

I purchased this for a friend. She used the information and says it works. Hmmm interesting Tumeric, red onions, apples and grapes to name a few help heal herpes.

The book dont explain well if you should take the supplements and the shakes or one or the other,,i did take the supplements and the shakes and after 2 months i now have and outbrake.

best 20$ ive ever spent.

They say, don't judge a book by its cover. Good tip for this one, because the cover promises this is a book about "Why we buy" and "the science of shopping" and that it has information about online shopping as well. The reality? This is more like "Feng Shui for Retail Stores" with basically all of the book being anecdotes about shops that had inappropriate arrangements of merchandise that kept people from buying as much as they might have. The lone chapter about the internet is a joke -- it's basically just the author complaining that he doesn't understand why anyone shops online, and offering a couple of very specific suggestions for how sites like Amazon and Apple Store can improve. No help at all if you are running anything but a physical retail shopping business.

The first four parts of this book are absolutely fascinating. It's an in depth look at the psychology of shopping and it is exactly what the title promises. Underhill's company gets paid to spy on people in stores and see what they're doing wrong and right. The gems in this book are the anecdotes and the specific revelations about how any obstacle you put in the way of a shopper drops your sales figures. Any way you can make life easier raises your sales. This all seems sort of obvious, but most people running the businesses don't think it through.One example is the entry zone at the front of the store - you'd think that's a prime location for signage, deals, brochures, etc. But when you're headed through the door into the store you see almost nothing and stop for almost nothing, and then (in America) you tend to drift to the right and then you're 'in' the store. If you put a store directory just inside the door, nobody uses it. Move it back a bit so you can find it once you're into the store and suddenly it's heavily utilized. He has hard observational data for all these, so they're compelling in addition to being fascinating.And of course all the bad examples are great fun to read (seniors crawling along floors trying to read labels on badly shelved medicine), as are the descriptions of how different groups shop (male vs female, old vs young, parents vs. single, etc.) The whole book is pretty much a commercial for Underhill's company, but it's still informative and fun reading.Where the book falls down is at the end, where a chapter on the Internet is shoehorned in and a perfunctory shout out to each of Envirosell's worldwide branches is included.Even though I think he's more right than wrong, the whole Internet chapter comes across as a confused old guy muttering about how he doesn't get that new fangled rock music. He complains about how many review sites there are, for instance, and has no idea how much it can transform the shopping experience (and not just be a poor supplement). Worse, the book's entire premise is mostly about how you need observational data of real customers because they'll always do things you don't expect (can't argue there), but he HAS no data on this topic, so it's just not compelling. I can't help but think the whole chapter is just in there because 'we need something about teh intertubes'.The 'Come Fly With Me' chapter must be in here because he needs to professionally backscratch all his international partners. It's pretty much useless and turns a mild commercial into an infomercial.If I sound too negative, please don't take it that way - I'm just trying to tell you why this isn't a five star book. You have 220 pages of 'awesome and can't put it down' book followed by 40 pages of 'what the hell am I doing reading this' slog, then another 30 pages of fairly decent reading. If you don't read those two chapters, it's a five star book!

In Paco Underhill’s informative text, Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, he explores some of the numerous factors that cause consumers to purchase a good or service or deter them from making an acquisition. Through detailing way sin which stores craftily set consumers up to buy as ways in which they may inadvertently be driving shoppers away, Paco Underhill writes to both retailers and consumers. Explaining the value of the science of shopping to those on the business end of purchases and making consumers aware of ways in which stores and companies target them are his objectives for writing this book. Unconventional ideas that he shares, some he openly admits to varying greatly from that of his peers, combined with proof and examples from his time working in the industry of analyzing consumers allows Why we Buy: The Science of Shopping to be a page turning informative text with shocking insight about scenes that we see every day and rarely think twice about. It is rare for me to flip through a three-hundred page book in the span of two days, but I was very interested in Underhill’s style of writing as well as how affected I have been by some of the methods he mentions as a consumer. This text goes beyond textbook information and uses workplace examples of those who track shopping habits as a living to explain the prominence of this “science” in the modern era.The first point that is brought up for evaluation is the importance of understanding customer behavior in a given store and adjusting it accordingly. Paco Underhill gives multiple examples of ways in which he has increased stores sales by 20% or higher through moving displays, changing signs and other small corrections. Validating these points, it is explained that customers may not enter a department from an anticipated angle and displays should accommodate the most common entry into a section. I found the idea of personal space as an issue to be very interesting and did not expect customers being bumped once to deter them from an entire section of a store. Furthermore, it is interesting how much goes into planning the layout of a store and that simply moving a rack out of a high traffic area can be extremely effective in boosting its sales.Another reoccurring point that is brought up is the changing dynamic of customers and of shopping in general. Previous to reading Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, I had not given much, or any, thought to why certain products were placed at designated shelf heights or that stores would have to change in the not so distant future to accommodate the large, rising market of elderly baby boomers. Underhill refers to the video tapes he studies for various stores throughout his text and utilizes one of an elderly woman unable to reach the dog treats that she wants and of the child who shares a similar problem. This ties into the section in which senses were emphasized as extremely important to the facilitation of sales. After walking past countless mirrors in Macy’s and other retail stores enticing me to try on necklaces and picture how I would look walking around with various handbags on my shoulder, it never occurred to me that this was exactly the store’s intention. Being able to touch items, see them up close and for some products even smell them increases the chance that they will buy something. The examination of comfort and ease of shopping was a fascinating section of this book, and has made me a more aware shopper. Signs being broken up for easy comprehension, space between clothing sections and clear packaging have all stood out to me recently and realize that they are influential in the shopping process. Moreover, I was interested in the differences that are described between men and women in their shopping habits. Men asserting a sense of pride and not asking for help while women will not hesitate a help desk create a stark contrast. Underhill uses this to highlight how different groups have to be marketed to in different ways and that two people can go through the same store and have entirely different experiences. Overall, Paco Underhill is extremely successful in validating the claims that he makes as he backs them up with real examples as well as results. Every assertion that he makes is followed up by some recorded instance in a real store that he has worked with and is followed up with the solution and result of the solution on the store’s profit. Even bringing attention to some everyday observations and supporting them with logic were effective ways of conveying his ideas. For example, to explain how the placement of goods in supermarkets can affect sales, Underhill brought attention to the fact that all supermarkets put milk in the back because it is one of the most commonly purchased goods and this causes customers to go through the entire store before finding what they came for, and hopefully they’ll purchase something else.The only part of this book that I did not find interesting or helpful were the concluding chapters. It felt like he ran out of ideas, but felt the need to fill more pages due to the fact that the beginning of the book was filled with valuable information. A few pages were largely dedicated to the plane industry and the world cup with very little information about marketing. But, the preceding chapters would cause any reader to think back to a time when they perhaps have fallen victim to one of the marketing schemes that apparently most stores utilize. Many sections I just found to be shocking and was even provoked to reread. Who would have thought that there would be a drastic difference in the percentage of women who will purchase jeans that they bring into a fitting room versus men would be 65% to 25%? (Underhill 10). After reading Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping, I feel as though I have gone through countless stores and have witnessed and made too many purchases to have never noticed the consumer behavior that I am surrounded by. This text is eye opening and a bit concerning as it makes you realize how much you haven’t noticed about the world around you. Paco Underhill is extremely effective in conveying to readers the ways in which businesses encourage shopping and how important certain overlooked aspects are. Emphasizing comfort and ease of shopping, product placement and predicting customer’s actions are all focal points of Why We Buy: The Science of Shopping. I would recommend it to anyone, even someone with no interest in marketing or shopping, simply to make oneself more aware as a consumer. Particularly, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys walking around the mall, like myself, because it was fun to make self-realizations and understanding why I make some purchases while simultaneously gaining insight about retail marketing.

I recently saw this suggested by some retail consultants so thought I would give it a try. If you have a store or are planning to open one there are some interesting points that could help you make the design and layout of your store more customer friendly. The internet chapter is a little thin and felt like it was written in a hurry without much data, it does pose some interesting questions but much of it is already out of date. I hope that as shopping moves more online they will have the kind of data from online shoppers that they have on brick and mortar.I am unsure what the purpose of the chapters about his global offices is.

Ramachandran, M.D., Ph.D., is professor and director of the Center for Brain and Cognition, University of California, San Diego, and is adjunct professor at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, La Jolla, California. I am a recent amputee, who like so many other amputees has had the strange experience of a "phantom" leg--ie: a feeling that there is still a leg and a foot where the leg and foot were pre-amputation. I saw an article by a well-known doctor who recommended the book "Phantoms in the Brain" by Dr. V.S. Ramachandran to help explain some of the mysteries of this phenomenon. I have not finished reading the book as yet, but what I have read is very interesting. If you have interest in this phenomenon, I believe this is a worthwhile book to own.

Q How do you eat an elephant?A One bite at a time.Q How do you explain a system that is complex, convoluted and adaptive.A Test small bites of stimulus and reaction to confirm or contradict your hypothesis.Ramachandran and Blakeslee created this delightful book using humor, logic and simple tests to illuminate how the brain works and doesn't work. Readers are even invited to run their own test at home to confirm Rama's (his term) conclusions.Why does an amputee deny her left arm is missing or her paralyzed arm belongs to her brother?Such examples offer fertile areas to explore to find what specific brain cells seem related to such behavior.Could we alter the perception of a missing arm using mirrors? The answer is "yes" and by doing so we learn a little more about our brain's adaptivity.So what's going on when a person can square a fifteen digit number as fast as he can say the answer?While these small bites offer small answers, many such bites shed light on big answers.While I want to learn more about the brain, I suspect whatever book I select will be way too technical so I will just reread PITB again.It's that good.

Like Oliver Sacks, Ramachandran tells of some startling neurological insights he's gained by examining unusual cases. These pages contain summary case histories of individuals who can't recognize faces - of individuals who deny that various body parts belong to them - of individuals who experience vivid hallucinations.Many of Ramachandran's breakthrough theories though are based on his treatment of individuals who suffered from phantom pain after an amputation. In the course of probing this puzzling phenomenon, Ramachandran hit upon some ideas that have far-reaching implications. Studying this phenomenon allowed him to advance new theories about the way stimuli are received and mapped in the brain.When a leg is amputated, the area of the brain that would normally register sense impressions from it is left without any incoming stimuli. That part of the brain sits expectant and hungry for some incoming messages. Neural connections in adjacent areas of the brain then sometimes expand, filling in the information vacuum. Those adjacent areas are ordinarily dedicated to registering sensation from unrelated parts of the body, such as the face. So when anyone touches the amputee's face, that sensation might be amplified and experienced as severe pain in a leg that is no longer there.Ramachandran believes that this tendency of the brain to adapt and "fill-in" might be at the root of many neural dysfunctions. When a person loses his sight in a part of his visual field, surrounding neurons might elaborate and reach in to fill the void. When a person loses some aspect of neuronal processing that has to do with body image, other neurons from areas of adjacent functioning might reach in to offer sensation input. The borrowed processing mechanism doesn't always fit its functioning into a "normal," coherent sense of the world though. The result can be strange distortions of perception.These ideas might explain all sorts of human folly - such as fetishes. Specifically, Ramachandran suggests that foot fetishes might arise because the sensation processing areas devoted to the feet and to the genitals typically lie adjacent to each other in the brain. Similarly, various kinds of body dysmorphic disorders, such as anorexia, might be traced to such take-overs.This book was written in 1998. Ramachandran suggested many experiments that could be made to test his theories. I wonder how many have been done in the interim? I'm eager to check out any of his more recent writings to get updates on some of these questions.He writes in an accessible style. What's more, he suggests a number of very simple, non-invasive techniques that people might experiment with to relieve themselves or family members of dangerous delusions. For example, he suggests spritzing cold water into the left ear of anorexics; he suggests using mirrors to help "neglect" patients recover an awareness of both sides of their body and of their environment.The 35 pages of small-print footnotes at the end of the book might appear to be a chore that you'd be inclined to skip. But they serve as a good summary of the main text, and also contain many fascinating suggestions for further experiments that could either confirm or disprove the important ideas in this book.Overall, this book is a real brain-teaser.

If you have struggled with trying to control your mind/brain/thoughts/actions and been frustrated, this book can be a helpful guide in understanding how the brain works and consequently lend relief or support in being with yourself :) If you are not bothered by such things but are enthusiastic about how things work, this then is again a wonderful reading on the nature and substance of one of the most complex phenomena in this Universe - the human brain.I gave 4 instead of 5 stars because the last few chapters do not make their case as clearly or strongly as the rest of the book does. In addition, even though the author touches on the subject of spirituality, god, consciousness, and its probably connections to the brain structure and experience, he does not mention anything about simple practices such as meditation and deep breathing and its influence on the brain. I did not expect these to be covered in the book but since the author ventured out of what I did expect and towards this field, it would have been good to see something mentioned to this effect.

About the Author

Frank B. Gross, Ph.D., served as a professor in Electrical Engineering at the Florida State University for 18 years, teaching and performing research in antennas, radar, sonar, microwave engineering, energy conversion, propagation, and electromagnetics. He earned an award as the Tau Beta Pi Teacher of the Year. Dr. Gross worked with the MITRE Corporation, Georgia Tech Research Institute, SAIC, and is currently a senior scientist at Argon ST. He has more than 35 years of experience in radar, smart antennas, electromagnetics, antenna design, and propagation. Dr. Gross wrote Smart Antennas for Wireless Communications with Matlab and contributed to Antenna Engineering Handbook, Fourth Edition.

This book provides the basic methods, parameters and measurements required for antenna design and implementations. It is useful for technicians, academics and professionals in antennas.

A most welcome book on recent developments in antenna theory and practice, fully justifying use of the term "Frontiers" in the title. Perhaps the closest that comes to this book in coverage of modern topics is Volakis's Handbook, now four years old. Modern applications of this classical field are emerging at a fast pace - largely spurred by the growth of wireless communications technology. In one handy volume one finds an encyclopedic coverage of modern antenna types - including ultra-wideband antenna arrays, smart antennas, Vivaldi arrays, artificial magnetic conductors, metamaterial antennas, leaky-wave antennas, plasma antennas and reconfigurable antennas; along with a select coverage of numerical modeling and optimizing techniques and of emerging applications in medicine, including ingestible capsule antennas! The book has a lovely cover and a spine that adorns my shelf along with classics like Schelkunoff and Friis, Silver, Kraus, Collin, Hansen, Stutzman and Thiele, Elliott, and Balanis, to name only a few.The book is clearly meant for select readers - such as a graduate student with a background of EM fields and waves who is looking for a topic for research in antennas, or is in the midst of it. In general, the book will serve as a great reference for any one who has more than a casual interest in antennas.Thanks, Dr. Gross, for bringing out such a nice book!

I am very impressed by the subject matter that this book covers. From antennas that are ingestible to antennas that are reconfigurable, the breadth of this book includes some of the most cutting edge antenna technologies. Several advanced antenna types are discussed in the ultra-wide bandwidth antenna chapter including fractal antennas. And the most interesting for me is that of plasma antennas. However, it isn't just new antenna types that are discussed. Pioneering advancements in more conventional antennas such as Vivaldi and leaky wave antennas are included and help to thoroughly define the frontier of antenna technology today.In addition, this book provides a depth into each subject that rivals that of books devoted solely to one topic. Design techniques, modeling and simulation examples, electro-magnetic theory of operation, and applications are all presented. The smart antenna chapter delves deeply into many theoretical and practical algorithms to exploit the latest antenna developments. The overview of state-of-the-art antenna modeling methods is an dispensable and very detailed chapter. It is apparent that the material assembled in this book will serve as a springboard for new books focused on advancements in antenna engineering for years to come.

This is a great antenna book that guides us through the latest advances in antenna technology. Many recent books cover novel antennas at great depth; however, this book takes a broad approach aimed at identifying and presenting recent antenna innovations from the viewpoint of leading experts while still providing extensive technical depth.I particularly like the many chapters that have a good balance of theory and numerical analysis supported by real hardware and measurements. The comprehensive list of references at the end of each chapter is quite valuable, and a big time saver.Since customers are constantly challenging us to reduce antenna size and profile, this collection of diverse antenna knowledge in a single book is very much appreciated. For many years to come, "Frontiers in Antennas" will be a valuable reference for the antenna engineer pushing the state-of-the-art.

Makes an otherwise complex subject seem simple by the way it is presented.I found it to be an exceptionally well written text, and would encourage anyone who is interested in the subject to buy it. A great book!
