#7,871 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I approached "The Beautiful Mystery" with trepidation. I'd binged the series up to this point and the reviews were mixed on this one, so I decided to take a breather. Then a friend of my wife's remarked it was her favorite in the series. What?! So I took the plunge. Louise Penny uses the isolated setting of the novel -- a monastery in the Canadian Wilderness -- to advance the "Arnot backstory," clarify what's happening psychologically with Inspector Beauvoir in the aftermath of the factory shootout . . . and tee up incredible action further down the road, all while teaching her readers a little something about Gregorian chant. Chief Inspector Gamache is such a comfortable and comforting character, and anything but one-dimensional. As this series has progressed, Penny has performed marvelously in plumbing his depth and with great restraint lets more and more be revealed. My good experience with this book propelled me forward and to the end of the series, to date, "The Nature of the Beast." Now as millions of predecessors, I must really hit "pause" and await the next volume.

What I most like about Louise Penny's books are the facts I learn from them and the curiosity to explore more deeply. I feel like a detective reading for clues. Not just "who done it" but also "what does Quebec look like?" I have been compelled to look up French words I don't understand and wonder at the ones I remember from class sixty years ago! I have learned about Quebecois' foods, clothing, government and politics. I have made new friends with the characters. And in this novel I have learned much about monasteries and Gregorian chant. This is a fascinating addition to the Chief Inspector Gamache collection.

I have been avidly reading all the Inspector Gamache books, and have really enjoyed the characters inside those pages; Armand, Jean-Luc, Reine-Marie, and all the inhabitants of Three Pines. I understand the need for drama in mysteries, but the story line that has wound through many of the recent books concerning Chief Superintendent Forneau have, I believe, been stretched out far too long. I have been sick, reading about all of the evil that Chief Superintendent Forneau has done to Inspector Gamache, and Detective Beauvoir, as well as many others. And to continue to put pen to paper, making the corrupt and evil person the apparent winner in these stories is simply too much. In this book, a beautiful friendship is torn apart by Forneau, that of Gamache and Beauvoir, and in reading the synopses for the next two books, it seems the the author has chosen to allow evil to reign supreme, and send Gamache packing, with Beauvoir's and Annie's life in shambles. She (the author) may feel this is necessary to her stories, but I, as the reader, find it highly unsatisfying, and has left me very unsure as to whether or not I will continue with the series. If I had even seen a glimmer of hope in the next two synopses, I wouldn't be this upset, but it seems that this is not to be the case. I would love for the author to explain why she is destroying the good characters and elevating the evil ones.

What a relief! No one dies in Three Pines in this novel. Sorry if that is a spoiler! But thank goodness! I was so afraid we would run out of residents! This takes place when a monk is murdered in a remote monastery. Gamache and Beauvoir go alone to solve it. I am sure that I would have found it fascinating anyway but I had just visited a monastery in the Midwest which served to heighten my interest and understanding of this way of life. There are many subplots going on and I couldn't wait to finish! Even though I usually make myself wait to read the next in the series- there is a strong desire to find out what happens in the next one. The relationship between Gamache and Beauvoir is sure to face some challenges and I can't wait to see what happens!

I have been reading the whole Inspector Gamache series and loving every one. I enjoy the mystery but especially enjoy getting to know the citizens of the little village of Three Pines, where so many of the mysteries take place. "The Beautiful Mystery" takes place elsewhere, in a monastery. At first I was disappointed and not sure I would be interested in learning about monks and Gregorian Chants, but I was happily wrong. The story explored why men would give their lives to the pursuit of singing the chants and taking a vow of silence. I was very moved. The main character, Inspector Gamache, is one of the most sympathetic characters I have experienced. His goodness and kindness are not to be confused with being weak. His ability to listen is what makes him such a capable detective. The author has slowly introduced another element to the stories: profound evil. The character that is Gamache's superior is diabolical. Each new story includes more about this character and he becomes a dark presence. I am so glad I get to read the next book immediately so I don't have to wait to discover what happens to this character. I couldn't imagine how the author would resolve the vicious dilemma.Another thing I appreciate about the author's books is that everyone is not all they seem. They have many hidden histories and character flaws. I am grateful I discovered this series. I look forward to my nighttime reading ritual when I get to spend time with Inspector Gamache and the other fascinating characters in Louise Penny's books.
