It has become one of the most popular, best known and most heavily attended tennis tournaments on the ATP tour — favorite of fans, television viewers and the media.His tournaments were highly popular with an entire generation of fans who flocked to one variation or another of the Volvo International at four different venues. A tournament they came to know simply as "The Volvo." It is a real insider's book. Anyone who attended and enjoyed the Volvo International at any stage in its history will love will love this book, and so will anyone interested in how professional tennis tournaments are staged, and what makes them more or less successful.Three exceptional people have contributed their talens to Nonsense at the Net. About the Author
Although he never played tennis, Jim Westhall was one of the first full-time tournament directors in professional tennis.His career in the game began in 1971 at the Mount Washington Hotel as a political consultant and marketing director. His first contact in professional was with Rod Laver, arguably the best professional tennis player ever. Laver was the touring pro for the hotel. Together they introduced big time professional tennis to New Hampshire. In 1973 Volvo of North America began a 23 year run as the title sponsor of the Volvo International. For two years, beginning in 1979, Westhall was the marketing director for the ATP and ws the liaison for their seven tournaments around the world.Westhall is a graduate of Duke University. Following graduation he spent a number of years in radio and television, including doing the play-by-play for Dartmouth College football on a 16 staton radio network in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont and New York state.He was an assistant to Congressman Louis C. Wyman in Washington, D.C. and later worked for a communications law firm in the nation's capitol and a national airline.He is married to Vera, and they have three children, James, Jr., Suzanne and Lisa.
