About the Author

DON RICHARDSON, the bestselling author of Peace Child, Eternity in Their Hearts, and Heaven Wins, has been studying the Muslim world for more than 30 years. He and his late wife, Carol, spent 15 years among the Sawi, a Stone Age tribe of Irian Jaya. Excellent work here. As relevant now as it was upon first publication.A common misconception is that people of tribal nations/areas are totally lost without the Gospel, fumbling around in darkness. Wrong! "He has also set eternity in their heart" (Ecc. 3:11); "God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us" (Acts 17:27). The book presents powerful evidence that monotheism is the first stage of religious development among people groups, not polytheism or animism. Monotheism then degenerates into polytheism etc., due to various reasons, e.g., manipulations of people in ruling positions. Therefore this book runs counter to the evolutionary models such study of religion holds as orthodox. As such, this book is startling to anyone who takes it seriously and grew up in Western public educations systems (where we are taught the evolutionary models only).The book is not a "deep theological treatise." It is rather a thesis predicated on evidence from anthropology, sociology, the study of religion, and Scriptural exegesis. Of course it is richly theological, but it does not get "theologically complex," or dense.As for a criticism: The book does not explore so much about how it is the Spirit of God moving these people to reach out and find God. People are not prepared for the Gospel on their own doing, but rather through the Spirit. However, this theme is in fact found within the book! As a personal opinion, I simply would have liked to see it emphasized. As I said, the book is not a theological treatise; it does not get lost in complex debate—so it is not surprising that we do not find, for example, a chapter on "The Work of the Spirit."Buy it! Buy it! Buy it!

It is astounding to see the background data added to the inspiring histories. I hear many "supposed" tales of God's actions but to have them so clearly and convincingly authenticated is great. This is a work I shall be referring to many times over. Due to "loaning" it out a few times, I actually think this may be the 5th or 6th copy I have now purchased. It is one that MUST be in our library. When my wife discovered we no longer have a copy she said, "Get one!". So of course, I did. His work in Peace Child is equally amazing.

A paradigm busting premise. It will change the way one religiously sees the world. Could the most ancient religious belief of all cultures, tribes, and tongues have been monotheism, complete with a name for the One True God? If so, then Jesus is a Man for all Seasons, one who points to every culture's most ancient and cherished relationship. I'd heard about the "sky-god" phenomenon in anthropology classes and in anthropological films, but it's usually mentioned in passing. However, the implications are stunning. Turns out that anthropology and archeology's commitment to the idea that man progressed from animism to polytheism to monotheism to atheism may need to be revisited.

Don Richardson has put a piece of the puzzle together that I knew existed but did not have the background information and missionary experience as he does. Having enjoyed both of his previous books "Lords of the Earth" and "Peace Child", Don pieces together the witness that God has left of Himself in the hearts of mankind throughout their history and cultures. Like a detective who detects the voice of God in the various tribes and cultures, that have existed on earth for ages, within their very own historic beliefs. Don gives to us the clues he has found that points everyman to God, no matter when or where he was born. Don is not promoting Universalism but rather a God who is big enough and loving enough to show this world that He has not left Himself without a witness, even within their own historic beliefs. I love and agree with the premise of this book of a general revelation of the Light of the world through the Order of Melchizedek, and a specific revelation of Christ through the Hebrew lineage. The process of the fulfillment of the promise to Abraham to be a blessing to the nations is a beautifully orchestrated concurrence of the broad revelation--that leaves it footprints in the folklore of many tribes--with the specific revelation of the gospel of Christ delivered to these tribes by the sent ones. The stories that divulge the evidence of this are remarkable. They moreover debunk erroneous theories of the development of religion while demonstrating folklore gives evidence of an initial monotheistic concept. Don Richardson presents his case in a wonderfully engaging style that utilizes colorful documented missionary stories. He then sums up by demonstrating the clear occurrences of the focus to the nations throughout the New Testament. There is good reason this book has a broad and enduring audience.

You might expect this book about a 4,000-mile two-person trip to pivot around the personal dynamics between author Erin McKittrick and her husband Hig, but it really doesn't. Hig has maybe one full page of dialogue in the whole book; the fact that he's there is often signified just by a change in pronoun: "we" rather than "I".You might also expect the book would try to entertain readers with poetic descriptions of exotic places and perilous events, but again, it really doesn't. A few well-placed adjectives add just a little color to a writing style that is overwhelmingly unadorned and unpretentious. There is no Muir-ish gushing over the scenery, and the dangers of the trip, from spooky bear encounters to the ocean waves rolling over the bows of their tiny boats, are retold with Scandinavian understatement.So why is this a five-star book? Because what it does well it does almost perfectly. A single paragraph will fling you from a forested valley over a soaring ridge, down the other side, and across an ice-clogged bay to a desolate beach covered in bear tracks and driftwood. The pace of the book is a lot like how I imagine the journey itself must have felt: plodding restlessly, hypnotically forward with every step and every page. At 200 pages, the book flies through 4,000 miles at 20 miles per page, and this dizzying pace gives the book a surreal, captivating, dreamlike quality. You soon come to see that the sparseness of the writing and the restrained presentation of the characters are two of this book's greatest strengths. It would have been easy to write a monster volume about every little event, detailing every tussle with her husband, every animal encounter, every desolate stretch of coastline. Instead, Erin McKittrick manages to tell a quietly beautiful, understated, and immensely enjoyable story of an epic odyssey through one of the least-traveled corners of the Earth.

An amazing adventure in this modern age, from a thoughtful, strong female perspective, in the vein of "Two Women", by Velma Wallis. It's completely different than most adventure stories -- more a matter-of-fact what-they-did with no braggadocio. Erin McKittrick's writing is skilled, interesting, easily understood, kept me enthralled to the end, and has me eagerly looking forward to her next book.Erin and her husband, Hig, have another adventure under their belts already in which they include Katmai, their two-year-old son -- who was conceived during the trek recorded in this book -- on a 200-mile trek on the North Slope of Alaska in Summer 2010. That adventure should be very instructional for young women today, showing them that today's woman can be as strong, resourceful, competent in the wild, and adventurous as those women who helped settle this country, if they choose to make that effort to educate themselves in the needed skills.I got a second copy of this book for my sisters to read.A Long Trek Home: 4000 Miles by Boot, Raft and Ski

Erin and Hig completed a most amazing, epic journey with only the most spartan of creature comforts. They kept pretty good spirits and good health throughout, and rarely (maybe never) actually required help from anyone else. They had everything planned and mapped out well in advance.I am most intrigued by the packraft they had with them always. It was almost a character in its own right. They could not have done this trip without it. Where can I get one?Somehow Erin was able to keep a lovely journal throughout and I am glad for that. This journey was much more than putting one foot in front of the other. I look forward to reading more of Erin and Hig's adventures, now exploring with their kids!

Although I love the outdoors and I value books that describe the adventures others have had there, I felt I was taking a gamble when I bought this book. It's apparently the author's first book,and I've often been disappointed by new authors' first efforts. Also, the publisher's description emphasized that "environmental concerns" had motivated the book and the trip it described. So I was concerned the book might be preachy and narrow minded. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that none of my concerns were justified. Although the author is indeed concerned about environmental issues (who isn't?), her discussion of these issues was balanced and unobtrusive. In most respects, this was a genuinely interesting description of what must have been a truly great adventure. Frankly, I'm somewhat awe struck that the author and her husband actually completed their amazing trek. And the writing is so good that I look forward to reading more by this author. I believe she has a great future ahead of her, not only as an adventurer but as a writer. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who loves the wilderness and who cherishes the life-changing experiences that they and others have had there.

A great adventure story! Erin and Hig's journey ranks up there as one of the great mountaineering/wilderness tales of all time! Yet the story is told with the humility you'd expect from an ordinary person who undertake's an extraordinary challenge. Great read. Erin tells the story well and describes the experiences with passion. Would have liked more images but read this book with the google images nearby to supplement. It was interesting to learn about the environmental impact of human activities along the way but good to discover also that there are still pristine areas where nature has its way. A most enjoyable book.

Brian Croft provides a powerful little book in Visit the Sick: Ministering God’s Grace in Times of Illness, published by DayOne in 2009. Croft has been the Pastor of Auburndale Baptist Church, in Louisville Kentucky for nearly 20 years, and brings some slivers of gold from a mine of experience to his fellow pastors in his 90–page work.Mark Dever writes the Foreword to this work, with a self¬–deprecating look at some of the apprehensions he experienced in his early years of ministry. Both his remembrance of inexperience and delight in Croft’s work provided an encouraging warning that those in ministry need be familiar with the contents of the book.This reviewer appreciated the logical flow of information presented in Visit. From the created order, Croft builds his theology of ministry into one that includes a view of sickness that keeps the gospel in view. He peppers readers with quotes from Spurgeon and Ryle to bolster the historical case for his position, that ministry to the sick and dying is indeed a high calling for a precious time when individuals consider their mortality. The practical proviso for the gospel was a very compelling aspect for this reviewer, as Croft introduces the fact that impenitence may only be broken, by an illness. As an aspiring pastor, this reader had never considered that aspect of hospital visitations to the level presented in the book.Of immense help, were elements from the sections on Theological, Pastoral and Practical Considerations. The preparations for a hospital visit taught a level of preparation for theological discussion, physical countenance and physical communication that will prove very helpful in considering the first visit. The forethought of each section will mandate that the book be at the ready for reference prior to this students first hospital visits.Historical perspective from authors and pastors such as, Ryle, Spurgeon, Baxter and others allowed readers to gain a historical perspective as well. Imagining the potentially lethal implications of clergy visits to people in centuries past, also provided clarity as this reviewer’s mindset is formed regarding the care of a congregation one day.The only negative experienced with the book, was that it seemed to end rather abruptly. It would have been helpful to have some testimonies of both good and bad interactions from patients, hospital staff and other emergency response personnel. The one doctor’s perspective (supplied by Pastor Croft’s Father) was helpful, but somewhat stilted.Overall, the book was very helpful. It will, by God’s Grace, be a much–used resource on this aspiring pastor’s shelf for many years to come.

As a matter of fact, over half the book is spent dealing with biblical and theological considerations.While task oriented people might be tempted to skim through those pages and get to the "practical" advice, by doing so, they would miss this book's richest value. So-called practical handbooks are plentiful, but a book that succinctly combines orthodoxy and orthopraxy in the specific area of hospital visitation is rare--so rare that I know of none besides this one.Croft has created a doctrinally sound, intensely practical and wonderfully brief guide for pastors to train and equip their deacons or care teams in this important area of ministry.

Finally, the author looks at the medical industries attempts to find a drug to "fix" FSD syndrome.The author seems to have a problem with the creation of the drug. Her attitude seems to indicate disgust with the major pharmaceutical houses that are "curing" a disease that the author does not view as a disease, but rather as a social condition. While recreational use of the pill is unwarranted and a problem, the author believes erectile dysfunction is nothing but a fancy name for impotence and that it is a natural part of the aging process. While delving into the history of impotence, and some of the attempted cures along the way, the author misses one big point. Life expectancy 50 years ago was much lower than today, and it wasn't uncommon for men to die in their 50s and 60s. With men living longer, they expect to be able to enjoy relations well past their 50s, which the author sees as a problem.I would say that I agreed with about 50 percent of the content of the book. Her interviews with men certainly didn't reflect my attitudes towards the issue and I doubt they would reflect a majority of men.The writing is scholarly and, at times, difficult to wade through. That makes this a book for those who need to read it or a willing to read through a rather heavy tome. If you are looking for a quick, light book on the subject, this isn't it.

In this badly done book, Loe argues against the preponderance of her own data to suggest we should be chary of Viagra use for ED when most of her respondents seem to think it's a good thing. I realize that postmodernism allows pasting non-sequiturs on data, but this goes way too far to fit itself into a vulgar feminist framework. There's also evidence of confabulation when ONE man in a focus group thinks Viagra is an aphrodisiac, which it most definitely isn't. I gave a talk on this at a New York Sociological Society meeting. The silly left has been trying to be anti-Viagra for years, but there are no good arguments for opposing it. Most women support it.

Loe describes how the application of the medical model turns sex into a commodity, with quality measured by speed of erection, efficiency of ejaculation, and ability to perform on demand and in the absence of relational connection. Meanwhile, men feel more and more pressure to attain the unattainable. Just as Prozac is used to medicate modern angst and stress, Viagra is used to relieve men's insecurity in this age of sexual McDonaldization. The irony is that antidepressants reduce sex drive, so men are more in need of Viagra in order to perform at the level of their (and their partners') increasingly high expectations.Loe's section on how BigPharma is extending the Viagra model to "Female Sexual Dysfunction" (FSD) is eye-opening. Look for "FSD" in the upcoming Fifth Edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM V).Also providing food for thought is the growing emphasis on sex as a purely physical act, ego-centered, non-relational and even alienated from others. When I see this focus in the sex offenders I evaluate, I see it as deviant. But according to Loe, it's market-driven and increasingly normative. Interesting.I gave it only 4 stars because the writing is somewhat pedantic and jargon-laden, and you have to wade through lengthy and tedious quotations. I wish she'd had the confidence to write more in her own voice.

If you already have a background in programming, this book will provide the clues and ample examples to get you started in VBA. It includes examples of a wide variety of syntax, and the examples are mostly correct and capable of being executed. Where there are errors, a person with some background will see and correct them. Good value if you need a jump-start.

Was hard for me to follow, left a lot on the table, especially in pivot table functions. Not a great resource for quick lookups, only for detailed learning. Google does a lot better for most of my learning.

I write VBA, SQL, C++, MySql and others. This is an exellent reference.

Buy it and you won't regretBest book of VBA I ever had. Very detailed and simple explanation how VBA actually works

Very good introduction to the topic, covers lots of topics but some topics not covered as much as in some of the bigger books.

Really thankful my boss bought it for me. It's a critical resource.

This book is well written as much as a book on how to do excel can do. The author does the best he can to cover generalities as excel can be coded in multiple ways. There is no clear cut way to do it (example: different loops can be used to do the same thing). I learned a lot by reading the book but you have to actually do it to learn it. I dont refer to the book when I want to know how to do something. I google it or look up tutorials on youtube for free. The book is a good start but now I just reference online options.

Efrat Haddi once again places before the public (especially aimed at children from the ages of 3 to 8) a book that simultaneously entertains and teaches. Haddi works with children in a democratic school where democracy is both a goal and a method of instruction. Her belief is that a democratic education brings democratic values such as justice, respect and trust to education, and includes self-determination within a community of equals. In this book she is joined by illustrator Abira Das once again, a sure sign that the message of the book will appeal to all children visually as well as intellectually.The setting is Africa where Leo lives with his Head Lion father Brave and enjoys life with his other lion cub friends, Rose and Crown. One day while out for play they note a turtle named Jesse who is on his back (shell) and unable to right himself. Rose and Crown want to help Jesse but Leo is hungry and would rather go home to eat than to stay and help. Rose and Crown talk to Jesse and help him get right side up, grateful to the two little lion cubs for being good friends. Rose and Crown return home, happy that they were able to help Jesse, and when they arrive home Leo mocks them and tells them they missed dinner for delaying their return home. But Brave praises Rose and Crown for being generous - helping someone without getting something in return. `Every generous act of helping others is a victory and victory makes us feel good.' Leo listens and takes it all in. The next day the trio is out for play and encounter a baby flamingo who has lost its way from its nest. They want to help, ask the turtle Jesse for advice and finally find the flamingo's mother who praises them for their generosity in finding her chick. The three lion cubs are happy and everyone wins because of being generous and unselfish.The combination of a well-written story illustrated with excellent art that entertains and teaches at the same time has become a trademark with Efrat Haddi.
