Antagonists in the Church: How To Identify and Deal With Destructive Conflict, by Kenneth C. Haugk

From the Publisher

Antagonism exists in the church. It leaves in its wake broken lives: people who are hurt, discouraged, and apathetic. Although only a very few persons are antagonists, these individuals have the potential to disrupt and even destroy a congregation’s mission and ministry. Who are Antagonists? “Antagonists are individuals who on the basis of nonsubstantive evidence, go out of their way to make insatiable demands, usually attacking the person or performance of others. These attacks are selfish in nature, tearing down rather than building up, and are frequently directed against those in a leadership capacity.” -Kenneth C. Haugk

I like the premise - it's spot on for identifying rats nests, and gangs of 'cool kids' within a church community that can destroy the cohesiveness and Tribe-like bonding that is so wonderful to experience in such contexts but... it doesn't live up to the title. It doesn't appear to offer any real solutions as to ho to actually *deal* with them. I was perfectly capable of identifying the problems and the affirmations were comforting but, having better tools, ideas, suggestions or permissions about how to approach these vipers would have been more useful. Disappointing.

The book itself is 5 stars and is great, useful for churches, and highly recommended. The 4 star review is due to inconsistencies with the purchase in relation to how it was described. The book was listed as a 2004 copyright but it is actually a 1988 copyright, not a newer reprint. The book was in fair shape - it fell apart upon opening & turning the pages (the glue was so old it was no longer holding the binding together) and had to be placed in a binder to read. Also, we purchased it for $5.71 plus $3.99 shipping but the receipt received with the book said the price was $2.81 plus $3.99 shipping. Our credit card was charged for the original purchase price of $5.71 plus $3.99 shipping, which is fine, just confusing that the packing receipt said something different.

A must-have for every clergyman. Do yourself a favor, buy this book. If there is an antagonist in your parish (and most likely, there is), this book will change your life. You will be able to leave anxiety and self-doubt behind as you realize that certain things are not your fault. It will considerably cut down on your stress level.

This is a great book for anyone who works in a church environment! I am a church music director, and have shared this book with our pastor. We both really enjoyed it, as it helped us know what to expect from various "challenging" personalities in the congregation.

This book has sheds light on the way that antagonist people in the church operate. Also, the author gives some good strategies on how to be effective in dealing with antagonist people.

Best book for providing boundaries against antagonism.

Gary Haugk confronts realities of church life that most pastors, especially beginners, are generally unprepared to face. Congregations, especially smaller ones, and especially congregations with unhealthy systems of conflict management, attract antagonistic people. The reason is simple--antagonistic people are punished for their aggressive behavior in every other area of their lives. If a person is intentionally aggressive at home or work, those realms of life will often quickly provide consequences for such behavior. Church life is different. Church people try to be nice. They avoid conflict. They think that appeasing and reasoning with difficult people will cause them to be won over by "love." The kind of people who become pastors are especially inclined to avoid conflict and try to manage people through avoidance and appeasement. Pastors do not feel that they can be perceived to be unkind or confrontational. And so, difficult people thrive in churches that will allow them to create chaos.Haugk says that antagonists must be confronted. They must be confronted by the pastor, and they must be confronted by lay people. They cannot be allowed to cause havoc in the congregation without understanding that there will be consequences for their actions. Pastors who are unwilling or unable to deal with difficult people directly will see congregations controlled by them. Being a pastor who shepherds a congregation takes courage.Perhaps only church leaders who have experienced what he describes will understand how right Haugk is. I have seen churches come apart at the seams because no one had the guts to stand up to people who everyone knew were destroying the life of the congregation. And I have seen Haugk's book used as a daily guide and operation manual to successfully diffuse a conflicted congregation.Of course, there is more to say about congregational conflict management--systems theory and peacemaking resources are very useful and necessary. But for the specific situation of a congregation held hostage by an antagonist or antagonists, I know of nothing better.
